98% of digital consumers have used a social media network in the past month. Which basically means that being an internet user means being a social media user.
Social media has changed the way we live our lives. It’s unavoidable and it's here to stay, but that lends the question…
How can entrepreneurs use social media for their business?
How can you get more leads and sales from social media?
Should you invest your time and money into social media marketing?
Each platform has its own audience, with people aged 16-24 favouring Instagram & Snapchat.
Now, you know I love Facebook - I even connected with my now husband on there when my friends convinced me to join! (Remember when you could ‘poke’ someone?)
So although this post covers social media stats on all the big platforms - Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest & LinkedIn - I’m going to be going into a bit more details about Facebook for you today!
Let’s get into the social media stats!
Globally, Facebook remains the dominant social platform by membership with YouTube being a strong second.
85% of internet users say they have a Facebook account!
It’s also worth taking a quick look at the following info - I’ve highlighted the UK & USA below, so you can see which social media platforms are used most by country:
A whopping 42% of the population (that’s 3.2 BILLION) use social media every day!
Just in case you think that “rich people don't use Facebook” - I’m about to blow your mind!
Compare that to LinkedIn…
98% of digital consumers are using social media!
There’s practically no digital audience that cannot be reached via social media.
Mobiles are now the primary social device, as the importance of PC/laptops declines rapidly.
Internet users are most likely to be accessing social media via their mobiles, having seen a sharp increase in engagement over the past few years.
It’s worth noting here that in the UK 81% of people use social media on their mobile and 96% of people are using a PC / laptop - meaning people are using multiple devices to access their accounts.
Although, it’s still true that the majority of social media users are accessing social platforms via computers at least some of the time, PC/laptops are declining as social devices.
Globally, we’re spending an average of a whopping 2.22 hours per person, per day!
Social media users are comfortable having accounts on a number of different platforms.
In 2013, the average internet user had about 4 social media accounts, the figure has now risen above 8.
Here’s a quick look at the key social media stats for the UK & USA:
100% of people in the UK use some sort of social media platform! And 98% of people in the USA do!
56% of internet users have watched a video on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat or Instagram in the past month, with a slightly higher percentage of women watching video.
People aged 25-34 are the highest percentage of video watchers on social, at a massive 61%.
Live video streams have quickly become an essential tool for any online business.
It also resembles one of the most important trends in which entertainment and marketing overlap the most.
For brands, live video allows you to engage with your audience in a two-way interaction, which creates a greater sense of trust, transparency and immediacy.
Among users of four major social platforms, 28% of people engage with live streams each month on any one of these services.
Facebook takes the lion’s share here, having the largest user base as well as the highest engagement rates with live video.
So we know that consumers like...consuming content via video, but what does that mean for entrepreneurs and selling your products or services online?
Put simply, it means you should be creating videos! A massive 88% of video marketers are happy with the return on investment that video marketing brings them!
Video marketers also get 66% more qualified leads per year than those who don't use video as part of their marketing strategy.
And one reason why video marketing is SO great, is that videos engage your audience for longer!
And if you're teaching something…
72% of people would rather watch a video about a product or service than read about it!
And just in case I haven’t drilled the point home yet…
95% of people are more likely to remember your CTA (call to action) after watching a video!
Last but certainly not least…
You guessed it.. YouTube is still the front runner for videos and it’s the second largest search engine, receiving 1.5 BILLION users per month and over 1 BILLION HOURS of video is played each day!
