As a business owner, your focus is on attracting and connecting with people, and converting them into paying customers. (That’s a very ‘birds-eye view’ of it, but basically true!)

But the thing is, you only really want to be attracting some people - not all people.

This is why your Client Avatar (aka ideal client) and target audience is so important and talked about so much in the world of entrepreneurship.

I’m sure you’ve heard that before, right?

So why is it so important to attract only the right sort of people into your business?

In its simplest of terms - it’s a waste of money, time, energy and resources. If you keep attracting the wrong type of people into your business, you may feel like your business is failing, or that you’re simply not ‘good enough’.

And that’s NOT TRUE.

You are just attracting the wrong type of people!

What Type Of Clients Do You Want To Attract?

There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ answer that I can give you here. Obviously each business, industry, entrepreneur and niche are different - the clients I want to attract are likely very different to the clients you want to attract.

But let me give you an example of the types of clients I want to attract into my business…

My ideal client is probably female (although I have male clients too), between the ages of 25 and 55 and lives in the UK, or USA. Remember, here I am talking about the IDEAL client I want to attract (that doesn’t mean these ‘rules’ can’t be broken if the client fits my other criteria.

So what is the main criteria that all my clients have in common? In other words, ‘who are the types or people I want to attract into my business?’

As a Business & Marketing Coach, I want to attract entrepreneurs who have online businesses (whether fully or partially online) who are dedicated and 100% committed to growing their business in 2020 and beyond.

My clients have a business or business idea and want help making that business a reality. They want real, proven strategies and tactics to fast-track themselves & their businesses into success with a consistent, profitable monthly income.

They usually understand the need for a business coach or mentor - someone to keep them on track, help them to understand what to do next and work through any beliefs that are limiting or blocking their path to success.

The Entrepreneurs that work with me understand that money is abundant and that in order to succeed, they need to be consistently learning and growing.

They are also pretty cool people!

There’s more I could add to this, but instead I want you to read through it again and see if any of these criteria apply to you and your business. For some of you, some of these statements may be true and some may not..

That’s ok!

Write up a list of what makes sense to your business and really think about the type of client you want to attract into your business.

What Type Of Clients Do You Want To Repel?

OK, so now we know who we want to attract, who do we NOT want in our businesses?

Well, in most cases, it’s pretty obvious - we want to repel the opposite of who we want to attract!

And in fact, this can be another way of doing this exercise - instead of starting with who you want to attract, if you’re finding that difficult, start by listing out what sort of person you don’t want to work with.

This applies to any type of business!

Let’s say you are an accountant. You don’t want to attract tax-loving, figure-seeking business owners who have tons of time on their hands and can easily do their own tax returns and accounts.

But you do want to attract people who are too busy, too overwhelmed or too stressed or worried about doing their own tax returns! Oh and if they hate numbers, that’s a bonus!

Are You A Good Fit For Each Other?

The next step is to figure out if you and your client are a good fit for each other.

Do you actually have the knowledge, expertise and experience to help this person?

Do you have the product or the service that will solve their problems and ease their concerns or worries?

In other words, can you add value to their life?

If the answer is yes, congratulations! You’ve just figured out the first step in creating consistent clients in 2021!

Promise me you won’t skip this step okay?!

I know, research isn’t the most fun thing in the world to do (unless you’re a research-nut like my husband!) But it IS important when you run your own online business.

Before you’re able to create consistent clients and really rock it in 2020, you need to determine what problems your audience face that you can solve for them.

Doing this is easier than you may think. The simplest thing to do is to ask them! You can do this in a few different ways:

The Survey

If you have a current email list (regardless of the size) send them a survey via email.

Personally, I love Google Forms for mine as they look great and are really quick and easy to create. You can also automatically collect email address from respondents so you can grow your email list at the same time! (And you know how important that is, right?)

If you don’t want to use Google Forms, Survey Monkey is another favourite, but they do limit your number of questions on the free plan. It was ten questions last time I checked and if you ask for name & email address, that’s two questions gone already!

Saying that though, you don't want to ask too many questions or your audience will see it as too long & boring! I recommend 3-6 questions MAX. So get REALLY SPECIFIC in your questions to ensure you get the results you need.


Polls are free and quick to set up on Facebook. Create a poll in your own Facebook group or in other groups where you audience hangs out.

If you receive comments or additional poll options that your readers have added, go back to that person (or reply to their comment) and dig a bit deeper into their answer.

Blog Posts

This time of year is perfect for the ‘round-up’ style blog posts and you’ll see a lot of these that you can use in your research.

What you want to be looking for, are round-up blog posts that have ‘Our Most Popular Blog Posts This Year’ as the title, or something similar.

Check out a few of these type of posts for your industry or niche, and see if you can find a common theme.

Perhaps the top 3 most popular blog posts this year have been about online sales, Facebook ads or copywriting. If so, these are likely to be really common problems or pain points for your target audience.

It’s also a great idea to read though the comments and see what people are saying there too!

What To Look For In Your Research

Now, there are hundreds of different problems and literally thousands of different questions that your target audience might be asking, but if you look carefully enough, you’ll start seeing some common themes throughout them.

People often asks question in different ways, such as ‘How do I get more leads in my business?’, ‘How can I reach more customers online?’ and ‘How can I get more people to visit my website?’

In fact, what all three of these question boil down to, is TRAFFIC & VISIBILITY.

Those are your common themes!

Additionally, you want to figure out your audience’s major problems. These are the things that people are usually most forthcoming with and will ask outright.

For instance, it might be ‘I can’t convert my subscribers into paying customers! How do I make sales via email?’ or ‘How do I run a 5 day Challenge?’

Organising Your Research

Next, it’s time to organise your answers in a way that you can refer back to quickly and easily!

Again, I recommend Google for this (specifically, Google Sheets) but you can use a plain Word Doc or Excel Spreadsheet too.

Here’s an example of my spreadsheet:


As you can see, the first two columns are labelled ‘Common Themes’ and ‘Major Problems’ as we just discussed. The third column is labelled ‘The Gap’.

‘The Gap’ is the missing piece of the puzzle!

Lastly, ‘My Solution’ is where you add what online course, offer, product or service is going to provide the solution to that problem! Note, this product / offer etc will be your core products, so you may have 3-5 of these that will apply to many different ‘Common Themes’ or ‘Major Problems’.

Simply fill in the columns and add to it every time you do some more research or notice any changes on your audiences’ problems.

Where To Find Your Audience

Don’t over complicate things!

If your ideal client hangs out on Facebook, head straight to Facebook for your research. If they are more likely to be in online forums, then go there!

The next step to getting consistent clients in your business is to create an awesome freebie or ‘Lead Magnet’.

Basically, your freebie is something you give to your audience in exchange for their email address. Because those people are interested in the topic of your lead magnet, it means they are interested in your business and have a great chance of becoming paying customers in the near future!

Decide On Your Freebie Idea

The first step is to choose a topic for your freebie.

Here’s how to do this:

Go through your Target Audience Research spreadsheet and see which are your most common themes or major problems.

Pick the topic that comes out on top and come up with your title

Note: Your title should be short & sweet and get straight to the point. Use Power Words that encourage and entice your audience to want to know more!

There are so many different types of lead magnets you can create. Some are quick and easy to do, others may take a little longer (especially if it’s your first time doing one).

I’m not a tech person, so I spent a ton of time finding the perfect (read quickest, simplest, best and easiest to use) software, tools and programmes out there.

Here’s what I recommend:

Screencast-o-matic - for recording your screen, webcam recordings, video editing

Photoshop & Cover Action Pro - for making your digital products (like eBooks & online courses look realistic & 3D)

Word Hippo - a fantastic online thesaurus for when you get stuck or feel like you are repeating the same words over and over and over…

Hemingway Editor - this online ‘app’ highlights lengthy, complex sentences and common errors, highlights them and explains how to fix them!

Design Tips

Creating the design of your freebie can be the toughest part for some entrepreneurs. That’s one reason I love and recommend Canva - it makes it so simple & easy!

You can either create the graphics and any cover images you need in Canva yourself, or hire someone to do it for you!

If you choose to hire someone else to create your designs, there are several places online which are fabulous and affordable! I’ve used the Fiverr and Upwork before, but have heard the other places can be good too.

But what if you want to create the graphics yourself?

Here are 5 of my top design tips to make creating your Lead Magnet graphics & cover easy-peasy!

  1. Keep things simple! ‘Looking professional’ or ‘high-end’ usually means less is more. Just think of top brands like Jo Malone, Chanel, BMW, Tiffany’s etc.
  2. Use bright, eye-catching colours
  3. Keep on brand with your colours and fonts
  4. And speaking of fonts - use one font type for your title and a different one for you paragraph text. No more than 3 fonts MAX. (The other font would be for any subtitles)
  5. Leave plenty of ‘negative space’. Negative space is the space around your text or images within your design. Leaving plenty of negative space helps to define your design and balances out your composition.

The next step in getting new customers and leads into your business on a consistent basis is to start promoting your new freebie!

There are plenty of ways to do this, both through organic methods as well as paid promotions. Let's look at the organic (free) promotional methods first.

Social Media Promotion Ideas

Social Media is typically your first point of call for organic promotion, and it’s definitely one not to be missed!

With over 2.6 billion people using Social Media in 2018 it’s definitely a great way to reach new clients and customers! And it’s expected to keep rising, with an estimated 3 million people on at least one social media network by 2021.

So where are your clients? Which platform should you focus on?

Well, if you did your research in Step #2, you’ll know the answer to that and can focus on the platform that the majority of your audience hangs out on.

But if you want a few statistics…



  • Facebook has over 2.2 billion monthly users
  • Twitter has over 320 million monthly users
  • Instagram has 1 billion monthly users

Personally, I love Facebook, and billions of other people do too!

When promoting your freebie on Facebook, there are tons of places you can promote, without having to pay a penny!

Organic Promotion on Facebook:

In your Page’s ABOUT Section, head to PAGE INFO and click EDIT. You can see that mine needs updating again! Add a link to your lead magnet here.


Next, scroll down to MORE INFO and add a link there too:


You can also edit your STORY to add a link to your lead magnet and an appealing photo as we have done here:


Next up, go to your COVER PHOTO and upload an image of your lead magnet. I’ve used a screenshot from my website, which looks pretty cool. It’s a great way to tie in your branding so that when visitors come from Facebook to your website, they know they are in the right place!

Once you’ve uploaded your cover photo, click on the right hand side to ADD A DESCRIPTION.


Add a couple of lines to push people towards your lead magnet & include your link!

PRO TIP: If you do this step on your mobile device, you can add emojis too!


If you’ve done it on your computer but want to edit it to add the emojis for a bit of interest, here’s how to do that:

On your mobile, go to the Facebook app > your Page > look for the post update that Facebook automatically generated for you > click on the image > edit & emoji away! TA DA!

Ok, so those are 4 places you can promote your lead magnet, just on your Facebook Page!

Of course, any time you post status updates, videos, FB Live’s, images or anything else, you can add your lead magnet link there too!

So, that’s your Facebook Page, how about your Facebook Profile?

Now, Facebook won't allow us to use your personal profile as a business, but that doesn’t mean we can’t include a few things here and there. Check out their Terms of Service before you do anything, but here’s a few things that seem to be ok.

  • Share a post about your lead magnet from your Business Page to your personal profile
  • Add a photo of your lead magnet with a link
  • Post the occasional status update linking to your lead magnet

Emailing Your Current List

No matter the size of your current email list, it’s still a great tool! Everyone on your email list is there because they have opted in to something from you before - which means they want to hear from you!

Now, you may be thinking ‘But I’m trying to get new leads in my business, why would I email my current leads?’

Well, what we’re going to do here is ask your audience to SHARE your freebie!

Why this works:

If you’ve looked after your email list well, been nurturing them and building a connection with them, your subscribers should already know, like & trust you.

This means that if and when you ask them to do something for you, a good percentage of them will happily do it.

To sweeten the deal, you can even offer your current subscribers a free gift or run a 48 hour competition!


Let’s face it Livestreams (YouTube Live or Facebook Lives) are a hugely popular at the moment, and have been increasing in popularity over the past couple of years. And livestreaming isn’t going anywhere!

So if you haven't already, it’s time to get on the bandwagon!

Livestreams don’t have to be a big, long drawn out task (especially Facebook Lives) and many people just grab their mobile and hit ‘Go Live’ without much planning.

But if you do want to plan your livestream a bit more, here are 6 tips to get you started:

  1. Write down some notes on the topic you want to cover (in this case, a topic related to your freebie) and keep it to hand for when you go Live
  2. Be sure to have good light on your face (facing a window or open door is perfect)
  3. Keep your camera (either mobile or webcam) at eye-level or just above for a slimming effect
  4. Try to go Live, in horizontal format if at all possible so you don’t have those horrible black lines down the side of your video
  5. Have a glass of water handy - it’s amazing how thirsty you get if you are chatting away for more than a few minutes!
  6. Engage with your audience! Ask them questions, say hello to people by name as they join you and build a connection with people

But what happens if no-one joins you Live?

Don’t panic! The more Lives you do, the more people will start tuning in and joining you live. Also, lots of people will watch the replay!

Just carry on as if you are talking to a group of people and refer back to your notes as and when you need to!

Embedding Your Opt-In On Your Website

Another way to get more leads and customers for your online business is of course to add your optin to your website!

5 Places to Embed Your Opt-In Form For The Highest Conversions:

  1. First and most importantly, your Lead Magnet should be placed front and centre of your websites homepage ‘above the fold’ (this means that users don’t have to scroll down before they see it).
  2. In your sidebar
  3. As a banner or ‘announcement’ bar at the top of your website
  4. On your ‘resources’ or ‘free gifts’ page
  5. Inside a blog post, just like this one below!

Most website platforms have some sort of pop-up feature you can use, but if yours doesn’t (or you prefer to use an third party supplier) I can highly recommend Sumo.

They have a great suite of apps that you can add to your website quickly & easily.

We’ve already seen that Facebook has over 2.2 billion people using it’s platform every month. How many of those people are your target audience and your next client? How many of those people do you really need?

When you think of Facebook advertising this way, you can see why FB Ads work so well.

And you’re not alone by any means, 93% of marketers use Facebook advertising regularly.

Facebook Ads are also a low cost way to reach thousands of people quickly and easily with the average Cost per Click (CPC) being $1.72.

Image Ads

Facebook Ads a pretty quick and easy to set up, especially if you choose an ‘Image ad’, which is the accounts to between 75-90% of an adverts performance - choosing the right image is critical!

Facebook have recently made this even easier, with a free option of hundreds of stock photos to choose from!

As you’ve already created your freebie graphic, why not use that for your Facebook ad?

How to get the most out of your Facebook Image Ad:

  • Use bright, bold colours
  • Keep text to a minimum (under 20%)
  • Avoid graphics or images that have small text or tiny details
  • Use a jpeg or png file
  • Images should be 1200 pixels wide, and no smaller than 600 pixels wide
  • Happy smiling people looking at the camera have been proven to convert better

Video Ads

Although image ads perform great, only one thing can possibly beat them - video ads!

Remember that livestream you did earlier? If you did that via Facebook Live, you already have a pre-recorded video ready to go!

Video ads can also be a lot cheaper to run than image ads, so give it a go!

As an added bonus, your video ad can create comments and engagement, which helps the free, organic promotion of your advert too!

Who To Target

Targeting is one of the most important aspects of your Facebook Ad, and there are plenty of different options to choose from.

The Facebook Pixel

If you have a Facebook Pixel installed on your website (and I highly suggest you do!) you can ‘re-target’ everyone who has visited your website recently.

Your Email List

Creating an advert targeted to your email list gives you another ‘touch point’ and keeps you front of mind.

Remember that your email subscribers are already interested in your product or service, so it’s a great way to remind them who you are and present new offers or opportunities to them.

Your next few customers may be on your email list and this could just be the extra nudge they need!

Lookalike Audiences

You can also create ‘lookalike audiences’ from your website’s Facebook pixel, or by uploading your email list inside the Ads Manager.

Lookalike audiences are exactly what they sounds like - Facebook will display your advert to similar people to those on your email list based on it’s data.

Similar & Specific Pages

Another great way to get more visible online and in front of your target audience is to target your ads to similar Pages to your own business page, or to target specific Pages.

For instance, if you are an online course creator, you might target James Wedmore, Amy Porterfield or Heart, Soul & Hustle.

A dog trainer may target Cesar Millan, Victoria Stilwell or other Dog Trainers.

Why would you want to do this?

Because if you have the same target audience, at least some of your audience are likely to be following other dog training Facebook Pages too.

You probably already know who are the big names in your industry, but if you want a little more inspiration, here’s a simple trick to find specific Pages in your industry that you can target.

For this example, we’re going to stick with dog trainers.

  1. Jump onto Facebook and put your search criteria in the search bar
  2. Click on ‘Pages’ along the top to narrow your search
  3. You can also check the ‘Verified’ box to get the Pages with the biggest number of Likes
  4. From here, make a note of the Pages you want to target and then add them in the Ads Manager, under ‘Detailed Targeting’ when creating your Facebook ad

How To Get The Best Results

Again, here you have two options - hires someone to run your Facebook ads for you, or do it yourself.

Either way, you’ll need to test a few different ad images / videos, different ad copy and targeting options to see which ad performs better an converts the highest at the cheapest possible cost to you.

Facebook make this easy with their ‘split test option’. Just click the button and let Facebook walk you through the process step by step.

If you want to get really good at Facebook ads, I highly suggest you take an online course on it as soon as you can.

Time for a quick recap..!

If everything is working just fine already (ie, you have plenty of consistent new clients for your business, then you don’t have to do this step.

However, if you have room for a few more clients, then it’s time to scale things up a bit!

Here are three ways to attract even more clients:

1. Hold A Masterclass Or Webinar

A webinar or masterclass is pretty much the same thing, except that a webinar usually has much more preparation time going into it.

If you hold a webinar, you’ll probably want to create and use presentation slides to go with your training.

I love creating these in either PowerPoint or Canva (if you use Canva, choose the ‘wide’ version), but you can also create them in a Pages on a Mac too.

With both the masterclass and the webinar, you’ll need notes for your training to help you and there are two ways to go about this.

  1. Training to Subscriber
  2. Training to Client

If you choose to use the Training to Subscriber method, it’s important that your masterclass or webinar is completely pitch free.

The idea here is to warm up your audience and generate more subscribers to your email list so you can sell to them at a later date.

People are also much more willing to join in the first time if they know in advance that they won’t be sold too, to so is a great option to reach a brand new, ‘cold’ audience.

If you want to make sales directly from your masterclass or webinar, you’ll obviously need to have an offer at the end of your training. This is a classic ‘webinar style’ approach and works really well - as long as you are comfortable selling this way.

2. Increase Your Facebook Ads Budget

Another option to scale up your lead generating activities is to simply spend a bit more on your Facebook advertising. You could also add in Instagram ads (also created in the Facebook Ads Manager) if you didn’t use that option the first time round.

3. Rinse & Repeat

Once you know what works best for you (and what you love doing!) simply rinse and repeat your formula!

Last but super-importantly, you must have a strategy in place for your new leads and potential customers.
