How To Grow Your Audience With A Free Challenge

Fed up of struggling to grow your audience online?  Have you tried using free challenges yet?

No?  OMG, you so need to!  Make it your mission!

Challenges are amazing for growing your Facebook Group, your email list, your messenger bot list… - in fact anywhere that you have (or want to have) a community of your ideal clients!

I’ve hosted a fair few free challenges in my time, enrolled in an in-depth course on the topic plus I’ve been a part of many myself, so it’s safe to say I have some experience with this topic!

Why Do People Love Challenges So Much?

Firstly, a challenge brings like-minded people together, and any where this happens, a spirit of community and friendship son follows.

People love to feel connected to one another and share a common goal.

Challenges are also great as baby definition of the word ‘challenge’ they speak to action takers (rather than procrastinators) and you want lots of action takers in your community!

Should You Call It A ‘Challenge’?

Week, this one is debatable.  In my opinion, if you want to attract the go-getters and action takers, then yes!  There is the train of thought that suggests that calling it a ‘challenge’ gives the impression that it is hard work or ‘challenging’ and therefore can repel people too - but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

In essence, it's up to you, but I wouldn’t let it worry you too much!

Will a challenge work in my industry?

Abso-freaking-lutely!

This is one of the amazing things about online challenges: they work for anyone, in any industry and any niche, regardless of who you are or what you sell!

Here’s a few examples for you:

A Health Coach could create a challenge called Lose 5 Pounds in A Week…

A Graphic Designer could create a challenge around how to choose your brand colours, fonts & theme…

A Copywriter could host a ‘Create Your Welcome Email Sequence in 5 Days’ challenge…

A Business Coach could create a challenge called ‘Develop Your 6 Figure Game Plan in 5 Days’...

I could go on - the possibilities are endless - but I hope you get the idea!

How Long Should Your Challenge Be?

This is one of the most controversial questions on challenges!

Here’s a few things to consider:

  1. How long do YOU want it to last for?  What duration makes sense to you anal fits in with your workflow?
  2. How long can you keep your challengees (yes, I just made that name up!) interested and engaged for?
  3. Can you show up consistently for 5 days in a row, 7 days, 2 weeks, a month?  What about weekends?

It’s this last question that I personally really feel gives you your answer.  Can you commit to showing up at weekends? Do you WANT to work weekends? And what about your members (aka the challengees?). Can they - and more importantly, WILL they - show up to take part in your challenge on a weekend?

Getting people to take part on a weekend is harder if you are in the B2B space, as they are less likely to be working.  

It’s also harder to keep people engaged and interacting with you the longer the challenge goes on for, especially if you’ve had a break over the weekend and then come back on the Monday.

Taking all this into account, I highly recommend doing a five day challenge.  Long enough to get sh*t done and not so long that you lose people or have to work the weekend!

How To Promote Your Free Challenge

There are a ton of ways you can promote your challenge, so we’ll just talk about a few ideas here, bringing i both paid and organic (free) promotional strategies.

Paid Promo Strategies

We’ll get this one done and dusted first:  Facebook Ads. It’s the quickest way to reach a wider audience and get in front of your warm audience (people who already know about you) via retargeting.

But it can cost a pretty penny if you’re not a FB Ads Expert.

So let’s look at some free options too…

Organic Promo Strategies

This is where the fun begins!

Blogging

At least a month before you launch your challenge, write a really super-duper epic blog post around your topic.  Aim for at least 2000 words and use plenty of images, graphics & sections to break it up and make it easy to read.

For example, if you are doing a challenge on creating your welcome email sequence, your blog post needs to create a need for this, so you could write a post on ‘How To Nurture Your New Email Subscribers To Turn Them Into Buyers’.

Don't forget to add the signup link (or link to a waitlist page) for your challenge a couple of times in the blog post!

Then, share, share, share away!

Social Media

Another thing you’re going to want to do is to utilise social media and create content around your challenge topics.

Share at least one piece of value filled content each day, some with a direct CTA and some using a soft sell approach.

You can create graphics to go along with these pieces of content too.

Email

Have a current email list or messenger bot subscribers?

Don’t forget to let them know about your upcoming challenge!

How To Plan Your Challenge

Ok, so you’re sold on the concept of challenges now and ready & raring to go!  But you need to plan it out first!

Here’s how you do it, in a nutshell.

  1. Create your challenge topic
  2. Come up with an exciting, too-good-to-miss title
  3. Decide if you want to use your challenge as a growth tool or make some sales by pitching a product at the end
  4. Plan your content for each day (the email you’ll send, the social media posts, set up a pop-up FB Group etc)
  5. Create your pitch (if you’re going to sell something too!)
